Considering the Naim Uniti Star? This guide explains its streaming and amplification strengths, the CD ripping limitation, and who it's best for.
Quick answer
The Naim Uniti Star is a versatile streaming integrated amplifier with excellent sound quality, but its CD ripping function is disabled, making it best for those who stream or have a separate CD player.
Why the CD ripping limitation matters
The Naim Uniti Star Ash Grey Special Edition has a known limitation: the CD ripping function does not work. Naim recommends the Uniti Core for ripping. If you plan to rip CDs to a hard drive, this unit will not meet that need.
As a pure amplifier and streamer, the unit is otherwise faultless. This trade-off means you get a high-performance all-in-one streamer at a reduced price, but you sacrifice the ripping capability.
Streaming and amplification performance
The Uniti Star can play, rip, store, and serve music, but the ripping is the only part that doesn't work. As a streaming amplifier, it supports high-resolution formats and integrates seamlessly with Naim's app and multi-room ecosystem.
With 1 year warranty and online-only availability, it's a serious option for those building a hi-fi streaming system without the need for a separate preamp or DAC.
Decision rules for the Naim Uniti Star
- You stream most of your music: The Uniti Star is an excellent streaming integrated amplifier with support for Tidal, Qobuz, and more. It handles high-resolution audio and integrates with Naim's app. If you rarely play physical CDs, this is a strong choice.
- You need CD ripping: The CD ripping function is disabled. If ripping is essential, look at the Naim Uniti Core or a separate ripping drive. Do not buy this unit for CD ripping.
- You want a space-saving all-in-one: The Uniti Star combines a streamer, DAC, and amplifier in one box. It saves space and simplifies your system. Ideal for a minimalist hi-fi setup.
- You prefer a dedicated CD player: The Uniti Star can play CDs but not rip them. If you just want to play CDs occasionally, it works fine. Consider adding a separate CD transport if you play many discs.
